Getting to Sheffield

By Air

For those coming from overseas it will be most convenient to fly to Manchester International Airport rather than one of the London Airports, and this is advised. There is a regular coach and train service from Manchester International Airport to Sheffield Railway Station, and the journey takes just over an hour. Sheffield can be easily reached also from London Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton Airports.

By Car

We recommend that unless you know the city well, when travelling from the north, east and south you should approach Sheffield by the M1 (and M18 if necessary). From the west, use the A57 Snake Pass via Glossop. The recommended main routes to and from the University are indicated on the Central Sheffield map.

               From M1, M18

Approach Sheffield on the M1 and leave the motorway at Junction 33, following the City Centre signs along the dual carriageway A630/A57/A61 Parkway, which ends in a large roundabout - Park Square. From here, take the third exit, the A61(S), along Sheaf Street, following the Ring Road signs, and passing the railway station on the left. Remain in the centre lane approaching the Sheaf Square roundabout, and then almost immediately bear right into Shoreham Street, again following signs for the Ring Road. Turn right onto the Ring Road and now follow signs for the University. Continue straight on as far as the third roundabout, the Brook Hill roundabout. Take the first exit for the main Western Bank precinct and the fourth exit for the
Applied Science departments in Mappin Street (off Broad Lane).

               From the West (A57)

Follow the 'City Centre' signs. The route continues to Western Bank, with the University being signposted for the last mile.

By Rail

Sheffield is at the heart of the railway network. Regular services operate between Sheffield and London St. Pancras (2.5 hours), Birmingham (1.25 hours), Leeds (1 hour) Manchester (1 hour) and Nottingham (1 hour).

By Coach

National Express runs regular Rapid service from all parts of the UK to Sheffield city centre. There is an Airlink coach service providing direct connection from Manchester Airport, London Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.In central London coaches leave from Victoria Coach Station near to the Victoria Underground and main line stations. Fares vary according to the time and day of travel. The anticipated return fare from London is £16.50. Other sample fares are - return from £6.75 from Manchester, £33 from Heathrow and £14.50 from Birmingham. The fastest service to London takes approximately 3.5 hours. The 60 bus runs from the Transport Interchange.

Getting around Sheffield

Sheffield is served very efficiently by public transport. The Railway Station and the passenger interchange are situated in the centre of the city. A modern supertram service runs across Sheffield connecting the Railway Station, the centre of the town, the University of Sheffield and Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

Halifax Hall

Halifax Hall of Residence, the venue for the conference and for the accommodation, is situated off Endcliffe Vale Road and is clearly indicated in the bottom left hand corner of the accompanying map. The 60 bus picks up at both the Railway Station and Transport Interchange, passes by the University of Sheffield, the Posthouse Hotel and the Halifax Hall of Residence. It runs every 10 minutes during daytime weekdays and Saturdays, and every 20 minutes on evenings and Sundays.

There are taxi ranks at the Railway Station and beside the City Hall. The journey to Halifax Hall takes about 20 minutes and costs about £6.
